So Now What: "Work" Shoes

In this series, Milli and Wiz evaluate clothing and accessory options that a young professional needs to be thinking about now that he is in the "real world." This week - Shoes.

In college you only needed a few pairs of shoes:  boat shoes, flip flops, some running shoes, and maybe a retro pair of Nike Air Max 90's. That list changes a bit once you get into the real world. I'll evaluate some of the more common shoes, looking at Formality, Style, and Who's Impressed by the shoes you've got on.

The Workhorse: Brown Wingtips

This is a classic look that is your day-to-day go-to work shoe. A great choice as it lets you show some personal style/flair. They come in all shapes, styles, and colors. You can find them in a relatively plain look, or shiny and flashy. Currently, lighter browns and tans seem to be on the rise, although I would argue dark brown is more all-purpose.  They are a versatile shoe that you can dress down with a pair of jeans and some colored laces, or dress up with a navy suit.

Formality: Just like your favorite button down. Perfect for everything - Business, Business Casual, or a classy night out.
Style: The thoroughbred classic, tough to go wrong.
Who's Impressed: Everyone - from your 50 year old co-worker to that random guy at the taco joint down the street

The Formalness: Black Cap-Toe Oxfords

A must-own, but a pair of shoes you are never excited to wear. These are the most basic dress shoes and widely worn in more formal settings. It's a must have in the closet for the formal occasions when they are required, but one I would rarely pull out for anything else.

Formality: Easier to dress-up flip flops then dress-down a pair of Black Cap-Toes
Style: zzzzzzz
Who's Impressed: Literally nobody

The Slip Ons: Loafers and Driving Moccasins

Cheating a bit by putting these two together - true loafers are more formal then driving shoes. But tons of variety in this category, with differing levels of formality. Generally though, acceptable in business casual and casual settings. Added benefit is that these shoes tend to be more comfortable then some of the other shoes on this list. A tan pair of plain moccasins or loafers is a great addition if you wear dark brown or black shoes on a day-to-day basis.  Great to have as a casual Friday or date night shoe.

Formality: All day Friday
Style: For that laid back look
Who's Impressed: That special someone at the bar

The Newcomer: The Monk Strap

Not as much a distinctive shoe as a particular style. My thoughts on the monk strap are still undeterimned. I think some guys can pull it off, while others certainly can not. They fit in as somewhat less formal than a traditional lace up but more formal than a slip on. They are a versatile shoe that can be worn out casually as well.

Formality: No one knows
Style: Somewhat questionable
Who's Impressed: The fashion forward dude that sits 3 cubes away
